Planeteer is a general solution for planet site setup, generation, and hosting

Planeteer Django app for managing and generating planet sites. Might make it push static site to static host.

  • host on a VPS
  • planet for specific causes - water provision in Mexico, homelessness everywhere (California particularly; with subfeeds for economics analysis/policy discussions, political discussions, particular organizations (progress updates and their various content))
  • translate the content
  • archive the content? Especially for non-native translations, since we put the time and energy into translating them
  • it’s important to provide a few where there’s a particular voice behind it that can be trusted, curatorially, to stick to a particular topic and give it a consistent respect and care of mind (standard of quality that they enforce upon themselves; personal pride)

2024-03-29: Allow myself to setup a basic planet site for VR, possibly 2: one for articles, another for videos. It’ll be a basic version that can get out there now, early, and be used to see if there’s demand for it/if it’s useful. Before investing more time in developing something more intense.

  • fork and tweak Planet Python as necessary, possibly use GitHub actions to push to PGS or just use GitHub pages

Newsletter

Most directly, planet sites are good for people who don’t use RSS feed readers or can’t use them
However, they’re useful for even those who do use them! They aid in discovery, especially for a new domain of interest

  • Javier was kinda pushing for me to get this going
    • Gather the feeds that we discussed for this (on FB messenger?)

For YouTube RSS feeds (like one below), may access the thumbnail URLs via code similar to this: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/4535488/how-to-get-image-from-this-bbc-feed-using-python-and-universal-feed-parser
